Mining
Disasters in West Virginia
Charles Bronson Starr lived in West Virginia in 1896, when the
state was overwhelmed with mining tragedies and worker unrest.
At the turn of the 20th century, West Virginia became
notorious for its dangerous coal mines.
Around
10 a.m. on December 6, 1907, a deadly explosion rocked the Monongah Coal Mine
in West Virginia, hurling people from their carriages and streetcars off their
rails as far as eight miles away. By the early 1900s, West Virginia mines,
engaging 100,000 miners, had acquired an infamous reputation for their
deplorable conditions: more than 1,000 miners perished between 1890 and 1912.
Workers
and their families lived in towns built entirely by mining companies creating a
system of dependence. Inflated prices at the company store left workers
perpetually in debt and dangerous conditions in the mines left them in danger.
The continuous stream of disasters inspired mass protests across the state and
by 1910 the U.S. Congress responded by establishing the Bureau of Mines, an
agency to investigate and inspect mines across the nation.

Charley was married to
Dove, and living in McDowell Kentucky, he said he was born 23 Jul 1896 in Mingo
Co., WV. His Employer is Elkhorn Coal Co. in McDowell, Kentucky. He was
educated as he signed his own name. There were many who did not. He had blue
eyes light hair. At this time Charley Starr signed his own name so he was educated.
World War I Draft Registration – didn’t mean they entered into service, it allowed the government to see how many healthy men there were. Who they could draft into war.
America Enters World War I
When the United States
declared war on Germany in 1917, Charles Bronson Starr was probably living in
McDowell, Kentucky.
After years of neutrality, the United States officially entered the war on April 6, 1917, providing much needed manpower and financial aid to the Allied cause.
When the First World
War began in 1914, the United States remained neutral. Despite this, German
U-boats attacked U.S. merchant vessels and declared “unrestricted warfare
against all ships” entering the war zone. Three years, into the conflict,
President Woodrow Wilson stood in front of the U.S. Congress on April 2, 1917,
and asked for a declaration of war, explaining that the United States must
“exert all its power and employ all its resources” to end the First World War.
Congress conceded. Thousands of Americans flocked to recruitment stations,
eager to “do their bit” to defeat the enemy. Within nine months, 175,000
American soldiers were stationed along the Western Front, prepared to take on
the Central Powers. While some Americans criticized President Wilson for going
back on his promise to remain neutral, most eagerly put their backs into the
war effort, supporting the four and a half million American soldiers who served
in Western Europe.
On June 26, 1917, just a few months after the U.S.
officially joined the war, 14,000 U.S. infantrymen landed in France. They were
immediately put through more combat training and, within a few months, were
fighting on the Western Front. 1917, USA. Credit: Interim Archives/Archive

On April 2, 1917, President
Woodrow Wilson addressed the United States Congress, asking for a declaration
of war. Four days later, the U.S. Senate voted: 82 for and 6 against. In the
House of Representatives, the decision was endorsed again 373 votes to
50. April 2, 1917, Washington, D.C. Credit: Universal Images Group/Getty

President Wilson’s speech to Congress was published
across the United States. On April 6, 1917, he asked that “all officers, civil
or military, of the United States that they exercise vigilance and zeal in the
discharge of the duties incident to such a state of war.” April 7, 1917,

Enacted just a
month after the U.S. declared war on Germany, the Selective Service Act
required all males from the ages of 21 to 30 to register for military service.
By the end of the war, half of the 4.8 million soldiers in the American
military had been drafted. 1917, Camp Admiral, Maryland. Credit: Underwood

His wife
Dove passed away on October 17, 1918, in Wayne County, Kentucky, at the age of
20.
She left behind her son Estill who had been born 10
months earlier, and her husband Charley Starr.
It appears that they might have had another child where she died in
childbirth or one that older than Estill.
By 1920, Estill Starr was not
living with his father or his paternal grandmother. In 1920, he doesn’t seem to be on any
census.

The transcribers do
their best to write out what they see and sometimes they have to figure it out
so you see James I on the top of this section, if you look at the image, it
clearly shows Samuel. But this difference
I am looking for Samuel and can see it very well. So sometimes the spellings, and other things
the transcribers mix it up.

There could be a couple of Conrad Koonrad Starr’s, there has
to be more research on this as if he is the one that is a Quaker, you can take
this back to the Constitutional Convention where a James Starr was a Secretary,
if it is not, then this will lead to a different place.
